Exchange and Engage at Glasgow Science Centre!
On the 26th August, we hosted our 2nd Scottish Crucible Forum at Glasgow Science Centre.
The Forum brought together Alumni from the national Scottish Crucible Programme to celebrate their research and knowledge exchange achievements since Scottish Crucible was launched eight years ago.
Delegates were joined by specially invited guests from academia, industry, government and media, and the event was chaired by science broadcaster Quentin Cooper and Prof Alan Miller, CEO of SUPA, and hosted by Dr Stephen Breslin, CEO of the Glasgow Science Centre.
Speakers, on topics ranging from engaging with the media and public engagement to the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and research leadership, included Steven Vass, Scotland Editor of The Conversation UK, Ken MacDonald, BBC Scotland Science Editor, Dr Susie Mitchell, Director of Glasgow City of Science, Dr Ken Skeldon, Public Engagement Director, University of Aberdeen, and Prof Miles Padgett, Deputy Principal Research, University of Glasgow. The event concluded with contributions from Professor Muffy Calder, former Chief Scientific Adviser to the Scottish Government and Dr Alicia Greated, Director of Research and Enterprise at Heriot-Watt University, who discussed current opportunities for Crucible Alumni to access UK research funding and engage with public policy.
Dr Ruth Neiland, Scottish Crucible Director and Head of Heriot-Watt’s Centre for Academic Leadership and Development, said, “The Forum demonstrated just how much Scottish Crucible Alumni value being part of this national network of ‘Research Leaders of the future’. Numerous interdisciplinary research projects and collaborative initiatives have emerged as a result of participants’ increased ambition, confidence and innovation having taken part in Scottish Crucible over the last eight years.”
