Calling early/mid-career research leaders from physical
sciences, engineering, life sciences and health disciplines:
On behalf of the SUPA, SULSA and SINAPSE Research Pools, you
are cordially invited to apply for a place on the forthcoming “Optical Imaging
Crucible” event.
Optical imaging is a key enabling technology for modern
biology. In healthcare, optical imaging is a critical component of diagnostics
and many therapies; in business, several high-profile medical technology
exports have emerged from Scotland’s HE research base and commercial life
science sector. Further research
developments in these areas have the potential to produce important
step-changes in medicine, biology and healthcare in Scotland and
internationally.
A bespoke Crucible event: This ‘Crucible-style’ workshop is
sponsored by the Scottish Funding Council and will explore the scope and
potential for an ambitious expansion of Scottish optical imaging development
through interdisciplinary collaboration. An intensive and interactive full-day
Crucible programme for selected participants, the event is organised by the
Research Futures Academy (Heriot-Watt University) based on the success of our
award-winning Scottish Crucible programme
(https://scottishcrucible.org.uk/). The
expert facilitator is writer and broadcaster Vivienne Parry, OBE who sits on
the Board of UKRI. Senior confirmed speakers include:
• Dr Paul
Andrews, Director of Operations, National Phenotypic Screening Centre,
University of Dundee
• Dr Thomas
M Baer, Executive Director, Stanford Photonics Research Centre, USA
• Prof
Khishan Dholakia, School of Physics and Astronomy, Head of the Optical
Manipulation Group, University of St Andrews
• Prof Rory
Duncan, Consortium Lead Scientist, Scottish Optical Imaging Network,
Heriot-Watt University
• Dr Stuart
Fancey, Director of Research and Innovation, Scottish Funding Council
• Prof Amy
Herr, Lester John and Lynne Dewar Lloyd Distinguished Professor, Biological
Systems and Engineering Division, University of California, Berkeley
• Dr Anke
Lohmann, Director, ESP Central Ltd; formerly Head of Emerging Technologies and
Industries, Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN)
• Prof Alan
Miller, CEO, Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA)
• Mr Graham
Watson, Executive Chairman, Scottish Health Innovations Ltd (SHIL)
Venue, Timings and Networking Dinner: The venue for the
Optical Imaging Crucible event on 2nd April 2019 is in central Edinburgh. The
daytime event (09:00 – 17:30) will be followed by a specially hosted reception
and networking dinner (17:30- 22:00) for all the Crucible participants to which
additional senior guests from academia, policy, industry and business are also
invited. Further logistical/programme
details will be provided beforehand to those who have been selected to
participate on this occasion.
Applying to join the Optical Imaging Crucible Event: We are keen to bring together a broad cross-section of researchers from different disciplines in academia and industry to identify collaborative research opportunities in optical imaging with applications in life sciences. Priority will be given to those with the experience that can contribute to building an ambitious pan-Scotland network across disciplines and organisations. Applicants should be at postdoctoral level (early to midcareer) or relevant industry / research institute experience.
If you would like to be considered for a place on the
Optical Imaging Crucible Event, please complete and submit this very short
application form briefly explaining your interest in optical imaging as it is
applied to Biology, Medicine and Healthcare and why you should be invited to
participate in this event.
The deadline for applications is: 10:00 am on Friday 8th
March 2019. We will confirm whether we
have been able to allocate you a place on the programme approximately one week
later.
We look forward to receiving your application!
Note: Please forward this invitation to any other colleagues
who may be interested in applying to attend the Optical Imaging Crucible event.
