Dr Anita Quye is a lecturer in Conservation Science in History of Art, undertaking teaching and research supervision for Masters and doctoral programmes in Textile Conservation, Dress and Textile Histories, and Technical Art History. Prior to her lectureship, Anita was Principal Scientist in the Department of Conservation and Analytical Research at National Museums Scotland (1989-2010), specialising in organic materials, notably dyes, plastics and archaeological residues.

Anita’s heritage science research experience with museum collections is extensive, having worked on significant collaborative projects with cultural and academia institutions worldwide. She proactively advocates interdisciplinary knowledge exchange and partnerships in studies of heritage material cultural.

  • Chemical studies of historical and archaeological textiles for provenance, significance and preservation
  • Micro-chemical analysis of organic heritage materials (UPLC, FTIR, GC)
  • Natural dyes
  • Early synthetic dyes (1850’s-1900)
  • Semi-synthetic plastics and fibres (1850’s-1950’s)
  • Light and pollution effects on dyed heritage textiles
  • Dye manuals and textile pattern books (1700-1900)
  • Historical recreation of materials and methods for preservation
  • Experimental, material and interdisciplinary cultures of industrialised textile production (1700-1900)
  • Decorative Scottish textiles
  • European tapestries
